You will be told how shearing a sheep and washing the wool was done back in the days and nowadays. You will separate the different parts of the wool, card and spin it on a drop spindle. If there is time for it you will also twist two threads into one.

Many of the Faroese still remember how wool was spun when they were kids, The drop spindle is one of the oldest tools of mankind. Before the spinning skills were invented, everyone was naked. It is believed that plant fibers were the first to be used, later sheep wool has been, by far, the most important thread in textile production.

The teacher for this course is Louisa Joensen. She spends most of her time with the Faroese horse, but is also very interested in ancient hand crafts. She masters the technique of spinning on a drop spindle, and has extensive teaching experience on living history events and festivals.

The course is in Faroese (Scandinavian and English as needed) and lasts for 3 hours. Limited attendance.

The course takes place in Tórshavn. Materials are included in the price. We offer refreshments and Viking cookies. In addition, you get a day pass to the Viking market, which is in the plantation in the days 1st to 3rd of July 2022.
