Soffía Björg is an Icelandic musician. Born and raised in a rural fjord in the west of the Island.
Her music is mood setting and cinematic. Her voice has beed described as an expressive raw force with the ability to convey the deepest heartfelt sufferings to the most intimate emotions.
And her tonality is quite special.
Soffía’s self titled debut album has been described as dark folk music. It was recorded in Sundlaugin Studio in Iceland in two sittings with producer Ben Hillier. Their collaboration, along with some of Iceland’s most talened instrumentalists, gave birth to a 12 track album which was digitally released in 2017.
One track from the album, ‘I Lie’, got Soffía a few nominations for the Icelandic Music Awards and the Radio Listeners Awards that same year.
In 2018 Soffía released an Icelandic track ‘Þeir vaka yfir þér’. The arrangement is different from the sound on the album. String- and vocal arrangements play a big part in the song and later in the year of 2019 a music video will be released.
At the age of 19 Soffía started training classical singing at the Reykjavik Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts. Then later switched to FÍH jazz school trying to find a singing technique that suited her. At the age of 25 she learned how to play the guitar and the music started flowing.
Later she studied at the Icelandic Academy of Arts and graduated in 2014 with a bachelors degree in classical composition.
Since the Soffía has been performing and touring in Iceland and abroad, solo and with band.
