Award winning vocalist Emilia Mårtensson and highly acclaimed pianist Matt Robinson bring their new duo project Solitary Creatures live to The Faroe Islands.

Joining the vocal/piano duo this evening is percussionist Adriano Adewale, bassist Sam Lasserson and Saxophonist Adam Waldmann.

The quintet take familiar songs and original compositions and frame them in unique and unexpected ways through their combined curiosity and desire to create something new in each performance. The music is poised, delicate and evocative, yet powerfully controlled.

Emilia has built a well-deserved reputation as being one of the most exciting vocalists on the London Jazz Scene and was included in the article ‘The New Face of British Jazz’ by The Observer before winning ‘Best Vocalist’ at The Parliamentary Jazz Awards in 2016. You can hear her Swedish heritage clearly, carved like an ancient rune, in the haunting and ethereal tones of her voice, in the dark melancholy of her storytelling, and in the intimate, nocturnal hush of her timeless confessionals. Allied with the jazz musician’s effortless sense of timing and expression, it’s enough to make Mårtensson a very special voice indeed.

Matt Robinson is a highly acclaimed London-based pianist, composer, and producer, primarily in jazz and contemporary music. He is best known for his melodic improvisations, harmonically nuanced playing, swirling synth soundscapes, and use of live electronics.  Matt is much in demand as a sideman and recording artist as well as performing regularly in various collaborations and original music projects including Snowpoet, Flying Machines and the Magic Lantern.

The duo collaboration ‘Solitary Creatures’ was born out of Emilia’s and Matt’s shared desire to explore new avenues to sound, colour, and open improvisation within the world of songs and songwriting. As a duo they look to expand on the traditional vocal/piano duo format through introducing live electronics and subtle extended techniques into their program which comprise of the duo’s own original compositions as well as carefully picked songs from the folk/jazz/art.pop catalog.
