Kirkja - Hattarvík

  • Always beautiful to sail out to the island of Fugloy. The village path between the two villages, Hattarvík and Kirkja, goes up over the mountain ridge above the steep slope, Sunnberg. Photo: Óli Gardshodn
  • As we walk down towards the village of Kirkja, the view is good over to the neighbouring island Svínoy. Also, we see two of the other northern islands, Viðoy to the right and in the middle Borðoy. Here we are just outside the village fence in Kirkja. The village gate can just be seen in the middle of the picture. Photo: Óli Gardshodn
  • The view from the highest point down over the village Hattarvík. In the background we see the mountain Eystfelli, which is the easternmost mountain in the Faroe Islands. Photo: Óli Gardshodn

This route is unique as it allows you to experience two isolated villages. One village you will sail to at the start and the other you will leave at the end.

This hike between Hattarvík and Kirkja is different from most  other hikes as it involves you sailing to one of the villages and walking to the other. Then from the second village, you can sail back home. However, this trip is only possible if the weather allows it and if the boats are sailing. Please check if the boats are sailing before heading on this trip. We recommend calling the SSL (Strandfaraskip Landsins) overseer in Fugloy via the phone number +298 293058 to inquire when and how the boat is sailing on that particular day.

From Hattarvík, the path is easy to find. You will walk south along the road through the gate. Then you will walk up towards the stone gate, past Dirhamar, Gullheygg and Kyrjaheygg and straight up towards Kross—this is where the road goes around the mountain crest. The path is not frequently used, so it is not visible; however, there are cairns, so it is easy to ensure you are heading correctly.

Once you arrive down the mountain crest by Kross, you will walk below electric pilling heading down to Kirkja. Both Hattarvík and Kirkja are fascinating villages to wander through. In Kirkja, you can walk down to the church and continue to the old landing, Niðri á Gjógv.

The ferry Ritan, always sails to Kirkja and when needed to Hattarvík. However, these details must be checked and confirmed by calling the SSL overseer in Fugloy (number +298 293058). If possible, we recommend sailing with Ritan to Hattarvík and then walking to Kirkja, as Kirkja has a shop and cafe. Please bear in mind that the shop and cafe opening times are limited.

Plenty of parking where Ritan docks in Hvannasund.
