Leirvík - Norðragøta
The path up over Mt. Leirvíksfjall is as ancient as it is beautiful, with views north across the strait to the Northern Isles, over the bay Gøtuvík and toward the southern seas
This is a fairly easy hike that takes about an hour to walk. Cairns guide you along; stairs and balustrades are set up in the crags where they are at their steepest. The last stretch down to Norðragøta is marked with posts with reflectors.
Several interesting historical sites are on the route. Above the football pitch in Leirvík, you will find the well-kept peat hut that tells a story about the hard work of people who laboured here in ages past.
Further up, you walk by Moyggjarhellið, a cave, where it is said young women hid when pirates marauded in the area.
A tower viewer is set up on Mt. Leirvíksfjall near the village path. Through it you can enjoy the views north across the strait to the Northern Isles, over the bay Gøtuvík and toward the southern seas. The viewer is taken down during winter, but the hike can be taken year-round, weather permitting.
The hike can be taken in either direction, weather conditions and mode of transportation being decisive for which direction is preferable.
